Stewe Alm joined the EMCDDA in Lisbon as a Scientific National Expert (SNE) in August 2014 and hold a position as "Scientific analyst — law enforcement" in the Markets, crime and supply reduction sector — Supply reduction and new drugs unit. He shares his expertise between drug supply and the Early Warning System (EWS) on new synthetic drugs.
Stewe have a combined background as forensic chemist and law enforcement strategic analyst. He started his career in law enforcement in 1974 when he was employed as a forensic chemist at the Swedish National Laboratory of Forensic Science in Linkoping, Sweden. During his time in the laboratory he performed research on drugs profiling on amphetamine and became later team leader for the synthetic drugs analysing group and was engaged as an national expert in a number of forensic drugs related EU law enforcement programs.
In 1995 he was offered a position as senior adviser on drugs in the Intelligence Section at the Swedish National Bureau of Investigation in Stockholm. After joined parts of the police training and courses on tactical and strategic analyst his position was transformed to strategic analyst with national responsibility for strategic drug issues. Later his responsibilities were extended to include strategic international intelligence co-operation including the co-operation within the EU with special focus on Europol and regional co-operation programs. In periods he has been attached to the UNODC as a consultative expert and made several drug- and drug precursor related missions to several countries in South East-, East- and Central Asia.
