Maria Moreira has been working in the field of drugs since 1992. She is currently working at the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), on drug-related research, data quality assurance and supporting the work of the EMCDDA’s Scientific Committee. Previously she was the head of the Portuguese national monitoring centre, which is also the EMCDDA's National Focal Point in Portugal.
Maria holds a MSc degree in Management of Information Systems and has a specific interest in the fields of research, quality assurance and public policies. She was involved in the implementation and the external evaluation of the first Portuguese National Drugs Strategy, was a member of the steering groups for the evaluation of the EU Action Plan on Drugs 2005-2008 and for the last external evaluation of the EMCDDA (2011). She sits on several advisory, editorial and evaluation boards and represents the EMCDDA in the Performance Development Network of the EU Agencies and on the Organising and Programme Committees of Lisbon Addictions: the European conference on addictive behaviours and dependencies.
